The Alberta Sport Recognition Awards program honours extraordinary Alberta Athletes, Teams, Coaches and Officials.
Since 2002, the Alberta Sport Awards have been presented to honor the extraordinary athletic accomplishments of our high performance Alberta athletes, teams, coaches and officials.
There are five annual awards, Junior Athletes and Team of the Year, Open Athletes and Team of the Year. Coach and Officials Recognition Award. The Biennial award category is – the Don Watts Coach Developer. This award will be presented in 2024.

Annual Awards
Nominations Open November 8, 2023
The 2023 Alberta Sport Recognition Awards are open to Alberta male and female athletes meeting the following criteria:
- Junior Female Athlete
- Junior Male Athlete
- Open Female Athlete
- Open Male Athlete
- Athlete’s primary residence must be in Alberta,
- Athletes, who live temporarily in other locations for education or training purposes and are products of the Alberta sport development system are eligible for nomination. A significant portion (at least five years) of the athlete’s or team’s sport development shall have occurred in Alberta.
- The athlete must meet Junior and Open, national and international age requirements for their sport.
- In the Athlete categories, the individual must have represented Alberta nationally or Canada internationally in the calendar years 2022 and/or 2023.
Nominations Now Open
The 2023 awards are open to Alberta teams meeting the following criteria:
- Junior Team of the Year
- Open -Team of the Year
- All eligible team members must meet their national/ international age standards for their sport.
- Athlete’s primary residence must be in Alberta, or the majority of the team’s athletes must reside in Alberta.
- Athletes, or teams, who live temporarily in other locations for education or training purposes and are products of the Alberta sport development system are eligible for nomination. A significant portion (at least five years) of the athlete’s or team’s sport development shall have occurred in Alberta.
- In the Team categories, the team must have represented Alberta nationally or Canada internationally in the 2022 and or 2023 calendar year.
Nominations Now Open
This award is open to Alberta coaches meeting the following criteria:
- Actively coached in Alberta for a minimum of five years;
- Consistently contributed to the successful development of Alberta’s young athletes;
- Recognized as a leading coach in his/her sport;
- Coached at provincial, western, national or international competition levels;
- Achieved a minimum of NCCP Level II certification in the old NCCP or equivalent in the current NCCP (Competition -Development), if available, in the sport;
- Contributed to coaching by leading or assisting with NCCP clinic facilitation, coaching seminars, provincial development camps, or production of resource materials, etc.; and
- Actively pursued professional development by attending clinics, seminars, etc. to enhance coaching skills.
Nomination Now Open
This award is open to Alberta Technical Officials meeting the following criteria:
- Actively officiated in Alberta for a minimum of five years;
- Endorsed as a leading official by his/her sport association;
- Achieved a high level of certification, as defined by the sport;
- Actively pursued professional development by attending clinics, seminars, etc. to enhance officiating skills;
- Contributed to officiating by leading or assisting with official clinic instruction, seminars, provincial development camps, production of resource materials, etc.
- Officiated at provincial, regional, national and/or international level competitions.

Biennial Award Categories
This awards will be presented based on lifetime achievement. This award will not be presented this year.
This award is open to Alberta National Coaches Certification Program (NCCP) Learning Facilitators/Evaluators meeting the following criteria:
- Trained and/or Certified as a NCCP Learning Facilitator/Evaluator;
- Actively facilitated NCCP workshops in Alberta for a minimum of five years;
- Endorsed by the Provincial Sport Association or Provincial Coaching Representative;
- Consistently contributed to the development of Alberta’s coaches;
- Recognized as a leading Learning Facilitator/Evaluator;
- Contributed to coach training by leading or assisting with NCCP workshops, coach seminars, development camps, development of coaching resources, etc.; and
- Actively participated in professional development by attending clinics, seminars, etc. to enhance Learning Facilitator/Evaluator skills.
Award Nomination Information
SUBMISSION CRITERIA:
Submissions for the 2023 Alberta Sport Recognition Awards must include the following:
- All nominations must be eligible by completing the application and providing a complete record of the merits and achievements of the nominee.
- Any organization, association or individual may submit nominations.
- Athlete and Team of the Year nominations, a Provincial Sport Association or National Sport Association contact must be identified in order to verify (if necessary) any information contained in the nomination.
- The Coach, and Technical Official Recognition Award nominations must have a Provincial Sport Association endorsement (signed by the respective Provincial Sport Association President or his/her designate).
- In order for a nomination to be considered, all sections of the application relevant to the nominee must be completed.
- Incomplete nominations will not be returned.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
1. Performance Summary:
Athlete and Team of the Year Nominations:
- Please provide a summary for 2022 and/or 2023 competitive seasons, providing a complete list of the following:
- names, dates and locations of events competed in;
- final performance;
- world and national ranking; and
- indicate personal bests, records established, or awards received.
Coach and Technical Official Recognition Award Nomination:
- Please provide a summary of accomplishments:
- names, dates and locations of events attended;
- indicate awards received; and
- other significant contributions made to the sport at the provincial, national and international levels.
2. Reference Letter(s):
In order to strengthen the nomination, please provide one or two detailed reference letters (provided in a separate attachment). The letters must include the following:
- Full name and contact information (email, phone number, organization and location) of the individual providing the reference.
- Please provide a written summary of why the nominee is deserving of the award in their category.
- Athlete and Team of the Year Award - background information is acceptable, focus your comments on the accomplishments of the nominee in 2022 and/or 2023 (1-2 pages max).
- Coach and Technical Official Recognition Awards, focus your comments on the overall accomplishments of the nominee.
