The Alberta Games have been a proud part of the sport community in Alberta for over 50 years and we’re committed to ensuring the success of the games for years to come.
Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo is set to take centre stage in 2028, welcoming athletes, coaches and visitors from across Alberta for the Alberta Summer Games.
The Alberta Games have long been a cornerstone of sport and culture in the province, offering young athletes the chance to compete, grow and pursue excellence on and off the field. Since 1974, thousands of youth aged 11 to 16 to compete against the top young athletes from across the province .
To support planning and delivery, Alberta’s government is providing a $1,150,000 operating grant to the host society. This funding will help cover key costs such as staffing, transportation, promotions and event delivery, ensuring athletes and visitors enjoy a welcoming and well-run Games.

This marks a proud return for a community with a strong legacy in sport. Fort McMurray has previously hosted the 1985 Alberta Summer Games, as well as the 1992 and 2018 Alberta Winter Games. The Games are expected to draw about 2,800 participants and generate strong economic and tourism activity across the region, delivering meaningful benefits for local businesses and communities. Competitors will take part in a wide range of sports, from baseball and rugby to swimming, mountain biking and beach volleyball, after qualifying through zone competitions held across the province.
