Make a Difference This Summer – Be an AFL Mentor

The Alberta's Future Leaders Program (AFL) is looking to hire mentors to live and work in selected Frist Nation or Metis communities located in Northern Alberta. You will create and lead meaningful experiences for youth through inclusive and culturally relevant experiences in sport, recreation, and leadership programs.

As a Mentor, you will:

  • Be employed by from approximately May 6-August 30, 2024
  • Organize and coordinate daily sport, recreation, leadership and cultural activities with a fellow mentor
  • Deliver engaging and purposeful programming that responds to community needs
  • Align programming to Arctic Sport & Dene Games in support of the Arctic Winter Games and other programs
  • Fulfill AFL program requirements and host community expectations
  • Promote active and healthy lifestyles
  • Build strong relationships with youth and community

Wage

  • Mentors are contract employees of the host community and will be paid an hourly wage of $22.50 per hour for the summer based on 40 hours a week.   

Job Location

  • The primary location for the AFL positions will be located in Northern Alberta within a program host communities, these communities vary on a yearly basis. Please see the list past host communities.

  • Applicants must be willing to relocate from May 6th- August 30th (16 weeks). The Host community will provided accommodations to mentors while working in community.

Qualifications:

1. Mandatory Requirements
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
  • A criminal record check with vulnerable sector check
2. Skills and Attributes:
  • Previous experience in;
    • planning, organizing, and implementing sport, recreation, leadership or cultural programs
    • creating safe and welcoming environments
    • working independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated, creative, adaptive and flexible problem-solving skills
  • Experience with conflict resolution and working in demanding situations
  • Knowledge of self-care strategies and healthy coping mechanisms
3. Assets:
  • Enrollment in a relevant post-secondary program: Native Studies, Physical Education, Recreation, Education, Social Work, Child/Youth Care, or related fields
  • Class 4 or 5 Driver’s License
  • Personal Vehicle
  • Mental Health First Aid Training / Trauma Informed Care/ Suicide Awareness Training
