TEAM ALBERTA NEAR PERFECT ON OPENING DAY AT CANADA SUMMER GAMES
Team Alberta wins all but 2 games on opening day; Basketball women set new Canada Games record
(Winnipeg, AB) Team Alberta kicked off the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg with strong performances throughout the day, with its teams winning all but two of their respective matches in hot and humid conditions.
Cam Berwald, Team Alberta’s Chef de Mission, was thrilled with the performance on this opening day: “After the opening ceremonies last night, Team Alberta began their competition today after years of training and dedication for these games. Our athletes delivered strong performances against top-level opponents. Our team is determined to showcase the young talent Alberta has to offer, and we are excited to start these Canada Games with a strong showing.”
The baseball team kicked things off for Team Alberta as it faced Team BC at Whittier Park. The young men came out of the gate roaring with an impressive 12-2 victory, thanks to two strong innings at bat and a solid defense. Later in the day, Alberta faced off against Team Saskatchewan. Highlighted by an intense pitching dual, Team Alberta lost a nail-biting match 3-2 that went into extra-innings at the Elmwood Giants Field. The first hit of the game from either team came in the seventh inning.
On the basketball court, Team Alberta’s men defeated the surprising team from New Brunswick by the score of 65-62, thanks to a last-minute three-point shot taken by point guard Fisayo Moibi of Edmonton. The boys took an early lead in the game leading at halftime, but New Brunswick came back pouncing to take the leading heading into the fourth quarter. After exchanging leads throughout the last 15 minutes of play, Alberta controlled the last 15 seconds play which ended in a beautiful winning shot.
The women’s basketball team faced team Yukon, and it was no contest. The Alberta ladies dominated from start to finish and took a 126-2 victory. Alberta allowed two points in the first minutes of the game, and their opponent failed to answer 124 consecutive Alberta points. The ladies looked strong, relaxed and confident as they opened the tournament. Alberta’s Brynn Masikewich, who competed and started for Team Canada the U16 FIBA Americas this past June in Argentina, led the team with 21 points. In the victory, Team Alberta sets a new Canada Games record for most points in a single game in Women’s basketball. The previous record was at 111 points.
Coming back to the Canada Games program after being excluded from the last two Summer Games (2009, 2013), the Men Softball tournament began at the John Blumberg Softball Complex. Team Alberta had two big matches on this opening day and pulled off an 8-6 win over Team BC. In the second match, the Alberta boys dropped 14-1 a difficult game against the very strong Team Saskatchewan.
