In Badminton, Team Alberta squared off against Quebec in the gold medal match at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Team Alberta finished second of its pool with a 2-1 record to advance to the quarterfinals, where they faced Manitoba.  A quick 3-0 victory over Manitoba, Alberta moved on to the semi-finals where they faced Ontario. In an exciting match, Alberta took home the 3-1 victory advancing to the gold medal dual.

Facing Quebec, it was a rematch of the round-robin duel. Earlier in the week, Quebec had won 3-2 a tight battle that went to a third and final decisive set, promising this gold medal match to be exciting throughout.

The men’s doubles team of Imran Wadia and Desmond Wang defeated their opponents (17-21, 21-18. 21-14) to give Alberta a 1-0 lead in the best of five matches. Quebec answered by taking the point in the women’s doubles. Kevin Lee came back from behind and took a three-set win (17-21, 21-19, 21-19) to regive Alberta the lead. The women’s singles match went the Quebec way, forcing the ultimate fifth match featuring the mixed doubles.

The intense match featured Austin Bauer and Takeisha Want dropped the first set 14-21 but answered back in the second set to take the nailbiting 22-20 lead. Heading into the ultimate set, Quebec took a 5-point lead, but the Alberta duo was determined to bring home the gold and mounted an incredible comeback to win the tie-breaker 21-18.

Alberta ultimately grabbed the gold medal in front of their fans.
