Team Alberta Wins 173 Medals During Phase One of 2019 Western Canada Summer Games 


Swift Current… With Phase One under wraps at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games, Team Alberta had 173 medal-winning performances, taking home the gold 64 times. 

Alberta had the most success in the pool, claiming 103 medals. 20 of those medals were from Team Alberta’s Special Olympic athletes.

Team Alberta Chef de Mission Jerry George of Stony Plain is extremely pleased with the results thus far and is eager to continue the podium performances leading into week two. 

“We had an outstanding Phase One with so many great performances.” commented George. “I am sure Phase Two athletes are excited to get started and try to keep that momentum rolling.” 


Team Alberta’s Team Sports Thrive on Final Day of Phase One

Phase One wrapped up on Tuesday with a flurry of activity that saw Team Alberta win gold in both mens and women’s soccer. Team Alberta also took home gold in mens softball.

Team Albert faced Saskatchewan in both the men’s and women’s basketball final on Tuesday, and Alberta came out victorious in both. For the women’s squad, the victory caps off a magical week which saw them win four consecutive games, after dropping their first game to the hosts, Team Saskatchewan. On the mens side, the group went a perfect 5-0, improving on a fourth place finish in 2015.


Team Alberta’s Canoe/Kayakers Pull in 28 Medals on Final Day 

Team Alberta’s canoe and kayak athletes competed in a variety of individual and team events on the final day, resulting in another 28 medals for Team Alberta.
