The Alberta Judo team made history today by winning the gold medal in the women’s team event, the first time it earns a gold medal in the event. Before today’s competition, Ontario and Quebec were the only provinces in Canada to have earned the gold medal in the team events.

Seeded as the top-ranked team, the ladies opened the tournament by easily advancing with a win against Prince Edward Island. In the semifinals, Alberta faced off against Ontario and took the victory by winning 40-10.

In the men’s tournament, Alberta finished as the second-seeded team. In the quarterfinals, the men faced off against Manitoba, and easily advanced to the semifinals where they faced British Columbia. But after hard fights, it was BC who advanced to the gold fight, relegating Alberta to the bronze medal position.

Judo ended these Canada Winter Games contributing 14 medals to Team Alberta’s tally, an increase of six medals from the previous Canada Winter Games.
