Statement from the President, Lethbridge 2020 Alberta Summer Games Society regarding the impact of COVID-19

COVID-19 has changed how we live, work and play here in Alberta and across Canada. Since last week’s public comment on the future of the Games many things have changed in this rapidly developing reaction to COVID-19. We now have a fuller picture of how Covid-19 has the potential to change how we plan and host the Lethbridge 2020 Alberta Summer Games. We are committed to the safety of everyone involved and support the efforts of the various levels of government to protect our communities and keep us safe.

Now schools, recreation centres and fitness facilities are closed. The reality for many of our young athletes is that their training and preparation is being affected. We understand this situation and want to let Albertans know that we are taking this matter very seriously. The health, safety and well-being of our athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators is our highest priority.

The Lethbridge 2020 Alberta Summer Games Society is closely monitoring all aspects of our current situation. We are in close contact with our partners, and we are committed to keeping our sponsors, stakeholders and volunteers informed as we move forward with solutions. Since this situation is very fluid, we will continue to consult, receive recommendations and make the best decisions for all individuals concerned. We’ll be speaking more with our partners and the provincial health authorities to make sure we are making informed, well researched decisions. I will make any announcements and will provide communications regarding the status of the Games through our website as this situation continues.
