Alberta Summer Games Volunteers

Alberta Summer Games volunteers make a big difference in the lives of our young athletes through their generous contributions of time, skill, and commitment.

The Alberta Games will need over 2000 volunteers to make the 3-day event successful and create a lasting memory for these athletes.

The 2018 Alberta Games in Grande Prairie will play host to 2800 athletes, coaches, and technical officials. These are Alberta’s best young athletes competing in 13 different sports.

Pick your area to volunteer from the food center, to security to ceremonies; there is a volunteer position for you.

The 2018 Alberta Summer Games have athletes from all across the province attend. Ages ranging from 11 to 17 years old, representing 13 different sports. The shear amount of volunteers needed to make this event a success is a challenge Grande Prairie and Area accepts! With over 3,000 athletes, their friends, and family coming from the 8 different zones across Alberta.

We collectively encourage you to join in on the excitement and “Unearth your greatness!”  

The 2018 Alberta Summer Games would not be possible without the individuals, groups and businesses who donate their time, money and services.  Collectively, they are known as the “Friends of the Games”.  I am encouraging you to accept this invitation to become a “Friend of the Games”.

Volunteer Descriptions

Wondering how you can “Unearth Your Greatness” at the 2018 Alberta Summer Games in Grande Prairie? We have broken down the volunteer descriptions of each type of volunteer criteria. Please if you have any question do not hesitate to contact the 2018 Alberta Summer Games Office –


Ambassadors are the go-to volunteers for all participants and spectators. These volunteers will be a welcoming face to everyone attending the 2018 Alberta Summer Games. The Ambassadors will have a wealth of knowledge about the Games as well about the Grande Prairie area. As ambassadors you will be required to promote the friendliness of the Games and the host community, as well as help participants and guests feel at home; welcome athletes, coaches, chaperones, assist with registration and athlete village check-in; provide a general Games overview to arriving athletes; take the initiative to help athletes, coaches, chaperones, and visitors in whatever they may need.

Sport Specific Volunteers

There are 13 sports that are part of the 2018 Alberta Summer Games. These sports require various volunteers for tasks such as set-up & take-down, scorekeeping and minor field/court maintenance. The sports are Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Canoe/Kayak, Football, Lacrosse, Mountain Biking, Rugby, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Triathlon and Volleyball (Beach).


Food Services Volunteers

We will be providing meals for all participants from Thursday, July 19th to Sunday July 22nd. This will require a large number of volunteers to greet and host participants, as well as perform various Food Centre duties such as prepping and cleaning tables, serving and replenishing buffet lines, and maintaining garbage and recycle collection/disposal stations.


Hydration/Snacks Volunteers

Participants will be provided with snacks and hydration throughout the Games. These volunteers will be in charge of Hydration/Snack stations and will have various duties such as greeting participants, controlling access to the hydration/snack stations and helping to replenish the hydration & snacks.


Parking Volunteers

With over 5,000 people coming to Grande Prairie for the Games, there will be a lot of traffic; with traffic comes parking. Using parking attendants at the major venues will be key to ensure the Games run smoothly.


Courtesy Car Drivers

We will be providing Courtesy Cars for special transportation requests and are looking for friendly volunteers interested in driving during the Games. Possible uses for Courtesy Cars could include driving VIPs around, picking up participants, delivering required materials, etc.


Bus Drivers

We will be providing Bus Transportation for the duration of the Games from July 19th-22nd. We are looking for volunteers with a Class 1 driver’s license. An internal bussing system is essential to Games participants and volunteers.


Medical Volunteers

The 2018 Alberta Summer Games will be providing First Aid and Polyclinic services for participants and spectators if needed. There will be First Aid stations set-up at venues throughout the weekend to provide minor medical attention. Medical Volunteers are very important and help provide a safe environment for everyone at the Games. First aid, CPR and emergency response will be required.


Athlete Village Supervisors

A variety of schools in Grande Prairie will be used for Athlete Accommodations (aka Athlete Villages). Duties of a Village Supervisor include greeting participants, providing information and assistance at athlete villages, directing participants to assigned rooms and controlling access at the Athlete Villages.


Admissions Volunteers

Admissions will be sold to spectators during the 2018 Alberta Summer Games. Admission sales will be set-up at major entrances to Games venues. Duties of an Admissions Volunteer include selling admissions to spectators, providing information, controlling access of venues and greeting spectators and participants.


Security/Communication Volunteers

Roaming Security will be implemented during the Summer Games, as well as Security at the Entertainment events. We want our guests to feel safe and looked after during their time in Grande Prairie. There will also be a Communication Centre which will be the hub for information and communication throughout the Games. The Communication Centre will require many volunteers.


Ceremonies Volunteers

The Opening Ceremonies is when Grande Prairie will officially welcome 5,000 participants and guests to the 2018 Alberta Summer Games. Volunteer assistance with set-up and take down will be needed, as well as ushers to organize seating and stage the participants. This will be one amazing Opening Ceremonies!


Capture the spirit, fun and vision of the 2018 Alberta Summer Games! We are looking for photographers who have the ability to acquire sharp in focus shots, especially sport/action shots with attention to detail. Your duties would be but not limited to: ability to turn around photos by end of day and upload images; attend promotional events pre-games; and photograph multiple sport or events during the games. The use of an editing software (Photoshop or Lightroom) would be an asset.
